Epiphanius provides an interesting area for speculation, in writing about the Nazarenes, saying that before the Christians were called Christians they were, for a short time, also called Iessaioi.10 He suggests at first—without any explanation—that the name came from Jesse, the father of David. Then he wavers, and concedes that it might have come from the name of Jesus, giving the impression that he has only the fact of the early name before him without anything but his own conjectures to explain
